SCBS Subcommittee
The Staff Compensation and Benefits Sub-Committee is charged with the preparation and presentation of the annual USAC Staff Compensation & Benefits Report to the University President, Provost and other University Leadership. Additionally, SCBS functions as the link between USAC and The Office of Human Resources to discuss relevant topics, issues and initiatives, as well as working in conjunction with Outreach to coordinate Listen Sessions. SCBS conducts an annual survey of a random number of staff each year asking for their opinions and concerns about issues specific and important to staff including health care benefits, vacation and ill time, compensation, performance management, professional development and other "hidden" benefits to improve the work-life balance of all staff. Beginning in August and continuing through May, the sub-committee meets weekly to critically analyze, review and discuss the results of the staff survey to identify the issues and concerns of staff to produce substantive and realistic recommendations for enhancements, additions and/or changes to staff benefit packages.
Our meetings culminate in the Staff Compensation and Benefits Report that is presented to the President, Provost and other University Leadership. This occurs in February of each year. Some of the sub-committee's successes include:
- Dependent Fee Authorization: Recently agreed to a 75% authorization for OSU dual-career couples.
- Domestic Partnerships: Benefit programs and ability to use of sick leave for illness of domestic partners.
- Improvements/Enhancements to Dental and Vision Programs.
- Adoption Assistance Program.
2007 - 2008 Goals
- Enhance the current relationship with Larry Lewellen, Associate Vice President for Human Resources, and Bill Shkurti, Associate Vice President for Business and Finance.
- Work to accurately identify the issues and concerns of University staff (through survey results, communication in the subcommittee meetings as well as the entire USAC committee) to produce substantive and realistic recommendations to Administration.
- Collaborate with the chair of the Faculty Compensation and Benefits Committee in areas that affect both faculty and staff.
- Extend an open invitation to Tom Bond, Compensation Manager, to attend weekly meetings in order to provide more in-depth feedback, specialized knowledge, and input on compensation issues
- Maintain a written brief summary of dates of committee meetings, topics discussed, speaker presentations, and status of SCBS report and survey development. This summary will be presented as a one-page summary to document the activities of the committee and progress of its charge and mission; but must be kept brief in nature due to the issues being discussed.
