Dr. Sumaya Hamadmad
Sumaya is a research scientist in the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Science at the College of Medicine. Within her laboratory, she focuses on establishing animal models for human eye diseases, such as retinal detachment and PVR, to understand disease progression and evaluate the efficacy of drugs, with the goal of curing these ailments.
Sumaya graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from Jordan University in Amman, Jordan. In 2001, she embarked on her pursuit of higher education in the United States, enrolling as a graduate student at the University of Iowa. She successfully earned her PhD in Pharmacology in 2006, subsequently undertaking a postdoctoral position at Yale University. Beyond her research pursuits, Sumaya possesses a passion for teaching, holding adjunct faculty roles at both Columbus State Community College (CSCC) and Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD).
Within the OSU community, Sumaya established the Muslim Scientists Employee Resource Group (ERG) and contributed to the efforts of the SALAAM ERG at OSU Medical Center. Her enthusiasm extends to advocacy and activism, with a focus on fostering a sense of belonging -not just being included- for all individuals, especially immigrants. She joined the USAC in 2023 aspiring to further these ideals.
During her leisure time, Sumaya finds joy in volunteering with her youth group, as well as engaging in outdoor activities like hiking, camping, and traveling with her husband and three children.
